Aramark Strike 'Dress Rehearsal' Friday | | 6/11/2008 12:00:00 AM
Gear up to support Aramark laundry workers preparing for the picket line and a potential strike at their plant on N. Stoughton Road.
If possible, join these courageous workers at a rally, picket, and cookout on Friday, June 6, from 10:30 am - noon to celebrate their unity and show strong support from various sectors of the community. Bring union signs or make them on-site before the rally.
Last Friday, workers voted unanimously to authorize negotiators to call a strike over Aramark's unfair labor practices. Aramark has denied union representatives access to the plant (guaranteed under the union contract) and even called the police to have them removed. The company has been threatening and intimidating employees for union related activities, and is clearly attempting to provoke a strike.
Negotiations on UNITE HERE Local 229's contract thus far have been one-sided, with the company refusing to even discuss the union's proposals. Aramark has given the union a list of 72 'take backs' including personal days that workers can use as sick days - a benefit that Aramark workers won during a successful 6-day strike in 1999 with strong backing from organized labor and the community.
Union members have been working under a one-week contract extension which expires on Friday.
