Obama, Solis, and Trumka to Visit Milwaukee for Labor Day

On Labor Day, AFL-CIO officers will join thousands of working people in events across the country to call for good jobs and a strong, middle-class economy. President Obama and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis will join AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka in a massive Labor Day celebration and rally in Milwaukee. An estimated 10,000 people are expected to celebrate Labor Day at the Milwaukee Summerfest Grounds! Milwaukee is not the only area that gets to celebrate the 2010 Labor Day in style. We have exactly two months left until Election Day. We must make the most of the remaining time so that candidates who will stand up for working families win on November 2nd. Hundreds of Labor 2010 activists are already making a difference by participating in member to member walks and distributing leaflets at their worksites. Now there is another way to get involved. Across Wisconsin, volunteers are setting up phonebanks to reach out to union households. Contact your local Service Area Organizer to volunteer for a phone shift in your area. Labor Walks Welcome New and Experienced Volunteers

“I haven’t been very politically active in the past, but now I understand that our jobs are really tied into the elections,” reveals Todd Strasser of ATU Local 519. Strasser took part in his first member to member walk on Saturday in La Crosse. Locked Out Honeywell Workers Defending Health Care And Pensions- 09/03/10

Honeywell is continuing its lockout of United Steel Workers members at a uranium conversion plant in Metropolis, Illinois. It’s one of just two plants in North America that converts uranium ore to UF-6 gas for use in nuclear power plants. USW Local 7-669’s Steven Lech says in June Honeywell locked out 230 United Steel Workers members when they refused to agree to major concessions – even though Honeywell is a profitable company.

Maryland Home Care Providers Win First Contract Rights

In their second victory since voting to join AFSCME Council 67 in 2008, approximately 4,500 independent home care providers throughout Maryland now have a contract that will help improve the conditions of their work and the services they offer.

House Approves Public Safety Collective Bargaining Bill

An amendment granting collective bargaining rights to all public safety workers was included in the War Supplemental Appropriations Act, H.R. 4899, passed by the U.S. House. It now moves to the Senate.
